Description
A Very heavy carved wooden effigy in the form of a stylized Ram. Known locally as "Uhmwogho" it was considered a memorial to Important male ancestors who were often honored with wooden ram heads. These heads are kept on altars where they provide a link between living family members and the deceased. The ram is a common animal of sacrifice in Western Africa and is often associated with ancestors. Edo peoples, Benin Kingdom, Benin, Africa. The Ram carving measures 21 inches tall. ( note the eroded base from sitting outdoors for some time) Provenance: Ladislas and Helena Segy, noted author on many African Art books, NY, acquired directly by Professor Charles Bordogna , Past curator of the SMA museum of African Art, NJ.
