Description
A carved wooden effigy of a Rooster, with elaborate design and carving style. A very elegant old example. In the Benin / Edo culture roosters are placed on ancestral altars commemorating the queen mothers of Benin. They stand for fowl and other animals that are sacrificed during rituals honoring royal ancestors. These explicitly male forms acknowledge that the queen mother is "more powerful" than other women and shares many powers and privileges with men. The rooster measures 14 x 11 inches ( 17 inches tall on professional custom display stand.) Provenance: Ex. Emerson Woelfer Coll, CA. Ex~ Christies NY, October 13, 1978 - "The Mayo Johnson Collection"; Lot 70, Ex. Mayo-Johnson Collection. This sculpture is listed in the Yale University Art Gallery Van Rijn Archive of African Art # : 27460
