Jack Kerouac Personally Owned Early French Editions of On The Road and The Subterraneans
Two early French editions of On The Road and The Subterraneans personally owned by author Jack Kerouac (1922-1969). The two paperback copies were probably complimentary publisher's or voucher copies (exemplaires justificatifs). Each volume is stamped on the front fly leaf with both the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp, in addition to the raised blind seal from Executer of the Estate, John Sampas. Provenance: This piece will be accompanied by our Certificate of Authentication as well as an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, friend and brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack’s wife.
The lot includes the following:
1. Jack Kerouac, Sur La Route, Translation from "American" by Jacques Houbard (Edition Gallimard, Printed at Montrouge, France by the Presses de l'Imprimerie Moderne in February 1960.) The last pages and back cover are perforated "SP". Contained in an early protective plastic book jacket, which is a little discolored. Expected wrinkling and uneven toning, else very good. 380pp. 8vo.
On the Road was originally published by Viking Press in 1957.
2. Jack Kerouac, Les Souterrains, Translation from English by Jacqueline Bernard (Edition Gallimard, Printed at Lagny-Sur-Marne, France by Emmanuel Grevin et Fils in July 1964.) The last pages and back cover are perforated "SP". The front cover is unevenly toned, and there is scattered minor water damage, else very good to near fine. 190pp. 12vo. Accompanied by the original transmittal letter from Agence Hoffman written in Paris, France dated November 2, 1964.
The Subterraneans was originally published by Grove Press in 1958.
The French translations take on added significance when one considers that Kerouac's mother tongue was French. Of his novels and poetry in English, Kerouac frequently incorporated phrases, sentences, and whole segments in French. Kerouac's French-Canadian and Breton ancestry was eagerly appropriated--and loudly proclaimed--by Edition Gallimard, who adopted Kerouac as a true son of France (see the triumphant front cover flap of Les Souterrains).
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
