Marilyn Monroe Signed Hospital Waiver Form, PSA Encapsulated & Graded Ex 5

A hospital waiver card entitled "Cedars of Lebanon Hospital / Los Angeles, Calif. / Responsibility / for Clothes and Valuables" signed by one of its most famous patients, Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962), as "Marilyn Monroe" at lower right. Dated May 24, 1961. Signed by an unknown witness and also inscribed by her: "I did not forget, good luck to you and your mother. Hildegard". The reverse is blank except for some handwritten figures found at upper right. PSA graded Ex 5. With expected gentle folds and wrinkles, else near fine. The card measures 6" x 4" within a slab measuring 10" x 6.125". Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Goodman Basil Espy III.

Monroe signed the following document reading in part: "I understand that the hospital is not responsible for clothing, jewelry, money, dentures, radios, television sets, or other personal property…"

Monroe had been previously hospitalized at Los Angeles's Cedars of Lebanon Hospital for an appendectomy in 1952; the rising star was photographed in the hospital bed looking at health manuals! (See attached photo.) The reason she was admitted for this visit almost ten years later in 1961 is unknown, but she suffered from numerous health problems during the first half of 1961. These included not only clinical depression and crippling dependence on barbiturates, but also the removal of her gall bladder and continued gynecological issues.

Provenance

Dr. Goodman Basil Espy III is a Georgia-based collector whose collection--amassed over 70 years--was just liquidated. His primary interests included Hollywood memorabilia, especially anything pertaining to Marilyn Monroe; sports legends of football, boxing, and baseball; and vintage radios.
