Richard Nixon Among Last Letters as President Takes Time for Congrats to Friend

Typed Letter Signed “RN” as President, 1 page, 6.75” x 9”. On pale green White House stationery with blind embossed presidential seal at top center. To Congressman and Mrs. C.W. Bill Young, St. Petersburg, Florida. Fine condition.

In full, “Dear Marian and Bill: Pat and I were delighted to learn that you will be celebrating your twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on August 20. We would like to join with your family and friends in expressing our heartfelt congratulations to you. Your life together gives eloquent testimony to the great good that can come when two people with love for one another -- and with shared ideals -- commit themselves to one another. With our warm wishes always …”

It may seem strange that the President would send a congratulatory letter to Congressman and Mrs. Young three weeks before their August 20th silver wedding anniversary. But Nixon had undoubtedly seen that day’s “Washington Post” banner headline “2d Impeachment Article Voted” (8.5” x 11” photocopy included) and, perhaps, wanted to make sure that Congressman Young knew how he felt about him while he was still President. A month earlier, in “The Washington Post,” in an article headlined “Prejudgment Charge Is Rejected by Rodino,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rodino denied that he had said that all 21 Committee Democrats were prepared to vote to impeach Nixon. Young was quoted in the article: “‘Maybe a scenario has been worked out in advance,’” suggested Rep. C.W. (Bill) Young (R-Fla.).”

Republican Charles William (Bill) Young represented Florida in the House of Representatives from 1971-2014. At the time of his death, he was the senior Republican in Congress, having served over 42 years. Young was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions which nominated Nixon in 1968 and 1972, Ford in 1976, and Reagan in 1984.
