Description
A large porcelain ginger jar in a underglaze cobalt painted cracked ice and prunus design with its original domed lid.
A large heavy porcelain jar with matching domed lid has been decorated in underglaze cobalt in a cracked ice and prunus design. The foot ring is not glazed but there are a few glaze adherences. The base is glazed. The glazes used are thick and very soft with a very smooth feel and a shiny appearance. The painting is expert with much delicate brushwork.
There is a partial Kangxi mark on the base center in underglaze cobalt. There is the number “334/100” in gold on the inside of the lid.
MEASUREMENTS
11 1/4” (28.6 cm) tall x 9” (22.9 cm) diameter. Weighs 2 lb 8 oz (2150 g)
CONDITION
The ginger jar and lid were drilled for a lamp, and the lid now has a brass bead for the finial. There are wear scratches around the neck of the jar from the lamp making process. There is a small chip in the very top next to the final where they drilled the hole to make a lamp. The drill went through two characters of the Kangxi reign mark. There are kiln flaws, such as black spots, pimples and pin holes in the glaze. There are a few wear scratches on the body from use. The underside of the lid and the foot ring have residue from glue that was not removed.
A large highly decorative jar that will add to a massing of blue and white porcelain in your décor. It has a great color of cobalt and a nice artistic sensibility.
