Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two hand-built terracotta female figures in a deep-red slip, each displaying characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as conical noses, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, tall foreheads with braided headbands, and projecting ears. Both figures exhibit attenuated limbs and slender waists, perky breasts, and rounded shoulders. The shorter figure has a triangular forehead and perforated earspools, and the taller figure displays a squared brow and disc-form earspools. With white-painted details embellishing their surfaces, both figures are lovely examples from ancient Western Mexico! Size of largest (disc-form earspools): 6.1" H (15.5 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Condition
Taller figure has repairs, light restoration, and some overpainting to portions of both legs. Both figures have age-commensurate surface wear, fading to pigmentation, small chips to foreheads, ears, arms, and legs, with nice earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
