1907, Lo Man, Connecticut. This outstanding and important piece of American folk art is crafted as a corner stand having five tiers of shelves with turned wood spools and the upper portion of the piece having an incredibly elaborate diorama with house at top and mountain with goats and animals and American flag flying. This is an incredible example of folk art of this period. The center of the back having a plaque which is tin and chased JF flanked by John Fox Jan 1 1907 and Lo Man, Conn. Exceptional and important example of American Folk craft. H78" W29 1/4" Note: Mr Fox was born 1868 in Austria, his father was a soldier in the English Army and he had four siblings. The family moved to Connecticut in 1890. Mr. Fox then moved to Charlotte, North Carolina for the textile industry. There he would become the personal assistant to Mr. James Buchanan Duke one of the founders of Duke Power. He held that possession for forty years. The shelf is said to have been used to display his children's Christmas toys. It was acquired in 1990 by the current owner at an estate sale in Charlotte, NC Dilworth neighborhood. 3000-6000
