Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) Young Lincoln, 1964 Advertising illustration for Lincoln Savings Bank, 1964 Media print lithography on paper. Pencil signed in lower margin. Originally created in 1964 for a Lincoln Savings Bank advertisement, Young Lincoln was hand proofed and printed by Atelier Ettinger. Full color limited edition lithograph print. A total of 309 prints of this kind were produced. A set of 200 were numbered. Another set of 35 were A/P's numbered with Roman numerals. A set of 60 were unnumbered; another set of 14 were unnumbered and printed on Japon paper. All of the prints made were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. This title depicts a young Abraham Lincoln, reading a book as he walks home from his job as a young railsplitter. The idea of creating the image of Lincoln as "the railsplitter" was the inspiration of Illinois politician Richard J. Oglesby. He sought to find "one thing in Mr. Lincoln's unsuccessful career as a worker that could be made an emblem ? [to] make enthusiastic the working people." Rockwell decided to recreate this image in Young Lincoln, an advertisement for Lincoln Savings Bank. Rockwell's ability to move his viewer's emotions was prized not only by magazine art editors, but by advertisers as well. Like most Post cover artists, Rockwell painted advertisements for everything from socks to Jell-O to insurance.
