Description
Rare gouache / WC painting on paper of traditional dress of France. This is an original work and is believed to have been used as the prototype / lithograph model for the publication of , "Les Costumes Regionaux de France", illustrated by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elisabeth Whitney Moffat and published by Editions du Pégase, Paris (1930). The PRINTED, e.g. offset lithographic plates of this publication areavailable, from time to time, on the market. This work depicts the traditional dress of La Bretagne (Brittany). It is titled, "Femme de Pont-Aven". It is signed by both artists. There are several examples of this series of original works in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We believe that this work is from that series and may have come from the same private collection as those donated to the Met's collection. Gardilanne and Moffat were also well known for their illustrations of traditional Dutch dress in the publication: "The National Costumes of Holland. Fifty Studies Reproduced by Lithography in Full Colours from the Originals of Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt."
