Rare pre-gold rush correspondence between two important and highly influential early Californians, one native-born, the other an immigrant from Switzerland. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1807-1890), writer of the letter, was a California general, statesman, and public figure, as well as businessman and large landowner. The city of Vallejo, California, was named for him, and the neighboring city of Benicia for his wife (née Francisca Benicia Carrillo). Jean Jacques Vioget (1794-1855), to whom the letter was written, was a surveyor and sea captain who came to California in 1837. He made the first survey and map of Yerba Buena (which later was named San Francisco) in 1839. He worked for John Sutter and later moved to San Francisco, becoming a leading saloon-keeper and merchant in the city. In the letter, Vallejo refers to business matters, 200 bushels of wheat, getting money for José Vallejo's schooling, etc.
