Monumentale nyangbai-Maske aus dem poro-Bund, der die soziale Kontrolle und das harmonische Weiterbestehen der Gesellschaft zum Ziel hatte.

Die Geheimgesellschaft poro besteht aus hierarchischen Graden, deren Zugehörigkeit nicht nur vom Alter abhängig ist, sondern auch vom esoterischen Wissen, dass über die Initiation erlangt wird. Wie bei den Senufo und anderen umliegenden Ethnien besitzt jede Gruppe eines Ranges ein eigenes Maskenwesen. Dargestellt ist hier ein Wesen der Wildnis, ein mächtiger Buschgeist aus dem obersten Grad, der die pubertierenden Knaben bei der Initiation im heiligen Wald begleitete.

Besonders interessant ist bei der formsicher gestalteten Kreation der Übergang zwischen der gewölbten Stirnpartie zur flächigen Gesichtspartie, die in einem überlangen Kinn endet. Genau dort, beidseitig der prägnanten Nase, sind kaum sichtbar die im Vergleich sehr kleinen Augen angebracht. Trotzdem oder genau deswegen wandert der Blick eines jeden Betrachters konsequent und fasziniert immer wieder genau an diese Stelle. Der ohne Zweifel absichtlich herbeigeführte, ungewohnte physiognomische Ausdruck unterstreicht das übernatürliche Wesen dieser formal auf das Minimum reduzierten Charaktermaske.
