Das Volk der Dogon umfasst derzeit etwa 350'000 Menschen und ist im Gebiet der Hombori-Berge angesiedelt. Die in verstreuten Dörfern lebenden Kleingemeinschaften sind die Nachfolger der Tellem, deren noch immer existierenden Behausungen hoch oben in den unzugänglichen Steilwänden der Felsen von Bandiagara zu finden sind.

Die Dogon sind im westlichen Kulturkreis vor allem für ihre Kunst bekannt. Die unverkennbar geometrische, reduzierte bis karge Formensprache macht aus ihren Kunstwerken faszinierende Beispiele traditioneller afrikanischer Kunst. Aber die Dogon faszinieren genauso durch ihre komplexe Mythologie, die sich in vielen Kult- und Gebrauchsgegenständen gestalterisch ausdrückt.

Die Dogon tanzen vielfältige Maskentypen, die den awa-Gesellschaften gehören und hauptsächlich anlässlich der dama-Beerdigungsfeierlichkeiten zu Ehren der Ahnen erscheinen. Sie stellen Tiere, Dinge oder Menschen dar und sind aus Pflanzenfasern, Stoff oder Holz gefertigt. Symbolisch werden sie von der etwa 10 Meter langen, schlangenförmigen Muttermaske hergeleitet, die bei besonderen Trauerfeiern für 6 Tage ausgestellt wird und bei dem grossen sigi-Fest besonders geehrt wird, welches nur alle 60 Jahre zu Ehren der Vorfahren stattfindet.
