Description
Collection of 55 different cachet collectible covers from the zeppelin USS Akron, 1930-1939. The Akron was launched by the Navy in 1931, Christened August 8. The Akron and Macon were among the largest airships ever built. at just under 800 feet long, they were only slightly shorter than their German counterparts, the Hindenberg and the Graf Zeppelin. The akron succumbed to a terrible thunder storm on April 4, 1933, killing 73 of the 76 on board. One of the survivors was later the captain of the Macon.
