1866 Panoramic View PORTLAND MAINE FIRE DESTRUCTION TENT ENCAMPMENT by J P SOULE
Description:
Antique Photographic Stereoview; "RUINS OF THE GREAT FIRE IN PORTLAND, ME. July 4th, 1866" by J. P. Soule of Boston. Title on mount, "No. 489. Panoramic View of Burnt district from the Observatory, looking southwest.". Research indicates that the horrific fire left 10,000 Portland citizens homeless. This photograph shows a make-shift tent city located on Munjoy Hill below the Portland Observatory. There is a 2 cent duty stamp on the reverse. Photographic stereoview is mounted on slightly curved mount board which is about 6-3/4" x 3-1/4". Condition: light surface soiling, scuffs, and edge bumps.
