British Military Officer's Pattern-1796 Brass Gorget
Pattern-1796 British Officer's Brass Gorget, Fine.
This 3.5" x 4.25" gilt brass half-moon shaped metal insignia represented the last vestige of decorative armor for British military officers. This Gorget was well worn in the 18th century around the neck of the officer held by a ribbon or cord, as an indication of rank by Commissioned Officers. This example is engraved with a British Royal "CROWN" over "GR" (George Rex, King George III). The gorget has a small period repaired crack in the very center of its top interior edge and is well worn overall with only slight trace remnants of the original gilding in the most protected areas with about 5% remaining. A historic traditional British military insignia and decoration.
