James Buchanan ALS Regarding Unpaid Legal Judgments

1p ALS fully engrossed by James Buchanan (1791-1868), future 15th U.S. President, and signed by him as "James Buchanan" at lower right. Written in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on August 5, 1824, and addressed to Robert C. Hall of Sunbury, Pennsylvania. On bifold paper with an integral address leaf bearing several philatelic markings. Expected light folds, some terminating in minor closed tears. Scattered foxing. Isolated loss corresponding to original wax seal areas. Else very good to near fine. 7.75" x 9.5".

As he explained in this letter, James Buchanan wrote not in his official capacity as a lawyer, but as an interested party requesting financial information bearing on a case. In 1821, a legal action was brought by Jacob Duchman and Michael Graeff of Lancaster against a man named Seidel for $872. Seidel had apparently sold some real estate netting $1,513, and now, Buchanan was writing to see if that money had been directed towards his friends' judgments. "In order to afford them satisfaction," Buchanan wrote, "I would thank you to transmit a statement which shall mention the amount originally set (?) upon each judgment, - + the nett amount of the sales of defendants property after deducting costs: - + if sufficient property has been sold to discharge both judgments…"

James Buchanan, a gifted lawyer and Pennsylvania politician, served as president between 1857-1861.
