Roosevelt Theodore
Teddy Roosevelt as President TLS Addressed to his Old Friend from Dakota Territory
1p typed letter signed by 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) as "Theodore Roosevelt" at center. Written in Washington, D.C. on November 2, 1908. Typed in blue ink on bifold paper with "The White House / Washington" letterhead. Expected paper folds, including a horizontal one just touching the "l" of Roosevelt's signature. A little weathering commensurate with age, else near fine. 7.125" x 8.75". Accompanied by an offset lithograph of Roosevelt after James T. White & Company, featuring Roosevelt's facsimile signature at center.
President Roosevelt wrote this letter to his old friend Dr. Henry Waldo Coe (1857-1927). The two men had first met in the Dakota Territory in the early 1880s, when Roosevelt unsuccessfully tried his hand at cattle ranching, and Dr. Coe served as one of the territory's first physicians. Roosevelt wrote Dr. Coe: "Indeed, your work in Oregon has been admirable. After you have taken your rest I shall hope to see you here in Washington…"
The exact context of the letter is unknown, but we can assume it has political implications. This conclusion is drawn from the date of the letter--November 2, 1908--as well as the fact that Dr. Coe, an inveterate Republican, served as Roosevelt's confidential political adviser for all matters Oregonian. (Dr. Coe had moved from the Dakota Territory to Oregon in 1890.) The presidential election of 1908 took place the following day, on November 3, 1908, in which President Roosevelt's hand-picked successor William H. Taft would defeat Nebraska politician William Jennings Bryan. It is likely, then, that President Roosevelt was congratulating Dr. Coe's work in drumming up support for the Republican ticket. Roosevelt and Dr. Coe would remain friends until Roosevelt's death in 1919.
