Carte-de-visite (CDV) depicting Captain J.J. Geer and Lieutenant A.P. Collins in chains. Verso reads “Capt. J.J. Geer and Lieut. A.P. Collins, of the Federal Army, as they appeared in rebel rags and chains before the rebel court at Jackson, Ga. on trial for their lives.” This photo was produced to advertise Geer’s book “Beyond the Lines, or A Yankee Prisoner Loose in Dixie.” (1863)
John J. Geer enlisted in May, 1861 as a Chaplain in the 48th Ohio Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of Shiloh and imprisoned in Andersonville Prison, Georgia. His book “Beyond the Lines, or A Yankee Prisoner Loose in Dixie” details his war-time experience.
