Description
Around 1909 Charles Clewell, who primarily worked in metal, perfected a method of creating copper clad pottery. Throughout his career he was very secretive about his process. By 1923 he was able to create a blue/green patination which contrasted beautifully with the reddish brown copper.
This vase is a trumpet shape with a wonderfully flared rim. The blue/green patina is most pronounced around the base, but also shows on the neck and underside of the rim.
Many Clewell pieces are unmarked, but this one is clearly marked with the incised script signature Clewell. Below the name are incised numbers.
Excellent condition. Measures about 6 3/4" tall.
