**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A lacquered wood finial of a flag used in "uma jirushi", samurai heraldry. This would have been attached atop a large flagpole, with its long open bamboo socket and gold globe ornament drawing the eye to the fabric below. Size: 2.45" W x 7" H (6.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in January 2016; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection
