United States, American Victorian, ca. 1900. A charming antique botanical painting, presenting gorgeous red, yellow, and white roses in various states of bloom against a muted background of silvery grey and sky blue hues. During the Victorian era, roses symbolized various states of love, depending on their color. White roses symbolized purity; pink roses symbolized gratitude, deep red roses represented the most passionate expression of adoration; and yellow roses symbolized subsiding love. Today, yellow roses are associated with friendship. Roses were the most popular flowers for nosegays and bouquets in Victorian times, and they are still beloved by us today. Size: 27.1" W x 17" H (68.8 cm x 43.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1990

Age wear with scuffs and nicks to painting as shown, light fraying to some peripheral fibers, and small areas of discoloration to obverse and verso.
