Description
This lot consists of a framed lithograph on paper, done in the Dada style of Jan Hans "Jean" Arp (German-French, 1886-1966). This stark image is a subtle meditation on the abstract, composed of bold shapes and strong tone. Handwritten graphite inscription at lower left reads, "117/135". A bold highlight to any collection of modern art. This framed piece measures approximately 29" x 25". Image measures approximately 15" x 11".
Reverse side of piece features the following handwritten inscriptions:
"Hans Arp. Edition Denise-Paris."
"For Marilyn with love. Happy birthday. [Signature]. 9.19.78."
Jan Hans "Jean" Arp (German-French, 1886-1966) was a poet, painter, and sculptor. Arp was deeply interested in art theory, as were many of his colleagues, including Max Ernst and Wassily Kandinsky. Arp's career was adorned with many accolades and honors, including the Grand Prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1954), the Grand Prix National des Arts (1963), a sculpture prize at the Pittsburgh International (1964), the 1964 Carnegie Prize, the 1965 Goethe Prize from the University of Hamburg, and, perhaps highest of all, the Order of Merit with a Star of the German Republic.
