Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, done in the style of Armando Morales (Nicaraguan, 1927-2011). A small, hand-painted inscription at lower left corner reads, "A. Morales '60". This framed piece measures approximately 18.5" x 14.5", with an approximate image sight of 17.5" x 13.5".
This bold, earth-toned image depicts a man and a woman paused, as if in mid-stride, to behold one another. They carry their loads on firmly planted feet, casting long and dramatic shadows between them. A haunting and truly poignant piece.
Reverse side of this attractive piece features a number of stamps and labels. A faint stamp is visible at lower left corner of canvas on reverse side; it appears to be an inverse image of a rabbit. While affixed label simply reads, "Pepenadores" ["Scavengers"], another bears the name and information of the framer, Barron's, of Woodland Hills, CA.
Armando Morales (Nicaraguan, 1927-2011) showed a great interest in art at an early age. He later received formal artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of Managua, where a rigorous academic schedule honed Morales' skills in draftsmanship and oil painting. In 1956, he was a participant in the Central American Painting Contest, in which he was awarded first prize for his painting, 'Spook-Tree'. This painting was later purchased by MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, New York City). Today, Morales is an internationally accredited painter, lauded for his portraiture and unique contributions to the world of art.
