First quarter 20th century, 146 x 74 cm, North East Persia

This large double bag with knotted faces, a knotted connecting panel and kilim backs was woven in Semnan, a city situated east of Tehran. A white-ground star-shaped blossom stands alone at the centre of each burgundy field, and three smaller star-shaped blossoms adorn the blue bridge. In the characteristic style of urban weavings, the border design of two floral vines and two secondary borders is drawn with precision. Only a very few Semnan khorjins have survived. This example has been in a German private collection for over forty years. – Perfect condition, stuffed to make a cushion.
