Description
A very finely crafted Horse and Rider effigy of "Biton Coulibaly" The pre-colonial founder of the Segou empire. The carved wooden horse and rider are decorated in various textiles and brightly colored paints, and were carried in processions honoring past chiefs and important dignitaries. The Horse and rider is a very important sign of honor and prestige among the Bamana and Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. The Horse and rider measures 36 inches long x 26 inches tall. Provenance: The Dr Brian Healy estate, New York.
