Alfred Hutty (1877-1954) is one of the most beloved and best known artists of the South. He was the teacher of Elizabeth O'Neill Verner and a founding member of the Charleston Renaissance. Shortly after Hutty died in 1954, his wife, Bess, donated 110 of her husband's etchings to the Gibbes Museum of Art, the start of the museum's permanent Hutty collection. Their son, Warren, took the rest of Huttys estate to Woodstock, NY, where it was rediscovered in the 1970s by Leo Manske, a College of Charleston printmaking professor, and his wife, Celia. As a result of Manske's encouragement, the late Raymond Holsclaw first represented the remaining Hutty works at Carolina Prints. Today, Alfred Hutty's Charleston is featured in collections across America. These highly sought after prints are a posthumous edition represented by Raymond Holsclaw dated 1973, copy written by Warren Hutty, Alfred's son. It depicts St. Michael's Church. The original was drawn in the 1930's. Warren died in 1979 and not many of these posthumous estate authorized prints were issued. The print is in good estate condition
