Description
Large Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Gentleman by Meyer Michael Dantzig (American, 1876-1939). Signed lower left and dated 1903. His work is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Princeton University Art Museum and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Born in Yanova, Russia, he emigrated with his parents at a early age to Philadelphia. He attended public schools in Philadelphia, the Industrial School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He then traveled to France where he studied under Leon Bonnat. Upon return to the States, he resided at 114 East 23rd Street in New York City. In gilt wood frame measures 48"x67"x3". Weight 30 pds. PROVENANCE: Edwin Moore Brogdon, PhD, collection. Dr. Brogdon was the owner of Brogdon Manor, a stately plantation home, located in the Brogdon Community, near Sumter, SC. The home was built in 1898 by his grandfather William Turner Brogdon. The Brogdon community was comprised of a local country store, cotton gin, sawmill and dairy.
