STORIES FROM GNAEUS POMPEIUS TROGUS
Tales of the Barbarians, Ethnography and Empire in the Roman West
Very Rare and Scarce 1st Edition Book
GNAEUS POMPEIUS TROGUS, Roman historian from the country of the Vocontii in Gallia Narbonensis, nearly contemporary with Livy, flourished during the age of Augustus.
His grandfather served in the war against Sertorius with Pompey, through whose influence he obtained the Roman citizenship, hence the name Pompeius, adopted as a token of gratitude to his benefactor.
His father served under Julius Caesar in the capacity of secretary and interpreter.
Trogus himself seems to have been a man of encyclopedic knowledge.
A Name is written inside the cover. Somaglia Uggeri Bianca (1743-1822) who became the countess of Vincenzo Maggi in 1764. Perhaps this book was passed down by family?
The title page features a silo graphic frame with medallions depicting Janus, Caesar, Cleopatra, Aurelia, Pompey and Alexander the Great with beautiful ornate initials.
The book has many engraving illustrations at the start of each chapter.
