The Darien Expedition or Survey under the command of Thomas O. Selfridge was charged with finding a shipping route that could be constructed through the Isthmus of Darien now called the Isthmus of Panama. In 1870 Timothy O'Sullivan was the official photographer. In 1871 John Moran was the official photographer. These surveys produced albums similar in size and scale to the Geologic Survey albums the Hayden, Wheeler, Powell and King Survey produced between 1867 and 1878.
The Inquisition Palace Palacio de la Inquisition was home of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, in Cartagena, Columbia completed around 1770. Many Jews and non-Catholics were tortured and executed here. It is classic Spanish Colonial style architecture now a museum.
John N. Moran (1831-1902) the brother of the famous painter of the American West Thomas Moran was a skilled landscape photographer primarily of Eastern and Northeastern views of America as well as for his work on the Darien Expedition.
