Description
CELLARIUS, Andreas (c. 1596-1665).Typus Aspectuum Oppositionum Et Coniunctionum Etz In Planetis , Plate 15.Engraving with original hand color in full. From Atlas Coelestis seu Hermonia Macrocosmica.Amsterdam: G. Valk & P. Schenk, 1708 (2nd Edition).18 1/2" x 22" The 15th plate of Andreas Cellarius’ “Harmonia Macrocosmica” marks the introduction of astrology into the empirical and scientific foundations of the Ptolemaic system. Thus, the chart shows remnants of the four-temperament theory, that is a proto-psychological model to determine personality and even illness when applied to Humorism. More importantly, the chart centers on a globe and the North Pole in particular. The North celestial pole is an imaginary point in the sky where the Earth’s axis of rotation, indefinitely extended, intersects the celestial sphere. From a cartographic perspective, it is interesting to note that California is still represented as an island.
