This cotton 1890's prickly pear/pineapple reel quilt is hand pieced, precisely treadle machine appliqued and hand quilted, with an unusual, layered design with a nod toward the classic diamond in a square design. The quilt is most likely southern, though I don't know the actual state of origin It measures a generous 82" X 88" and is excellent, never washed condition, with some age spotting in places (mostly on the back), slight color variation in the vegetable-dyed teal, and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall, with strong solid red, persimmon, and maroon colors. There are rainbow designs quilted throughout at 5 stitches to the inch. The back is off white, the edge is rolled over from the front, and the batting is thin-to-medium. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light.
