Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Apache people, ca. early 20th century CE. A woven basketry vessel of a broad, bell-shaped form with a slightly concave base, a rounded body with a sloped shoulder, a narrow neck with a thick rim, and a pair of braided horse-hair handles. Water baskets like this example were covered in thick, sticky pitch to seal the innumerable gaps between the woven strands to mitigate and altogether halt any leakage of the liquid contained within. Size: 10.375" W x 10.1" H (26.4 cm x 25.7 cm).

Minor nicks to base, body, and neck, with minor desiccation, chipping, and darkening to exterior pitch layer, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
