Description
**First Time At Auction**

Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A charming near-translucent carnelian intaglio of an oval form depicting a winged Nike/Victory and a mythological hybrid - bearded male and bee figure - perhaps Aristaeus, a culture hero credited by Athenian writers for several practical arts, among them bee keeping. The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but also brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. Size: 1.5" W x 1.1" H (3.8 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
