Description
Joshua Chamberlain DS Handsomely Displayed!
A check entirely engrossed by former Union General Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914), signed by him as "Joshua L. Chamberlain" on the payee line, and initialed by him as "JLC" on the 2-cent orange revenue stamp. The check is displayed in a floating mount below a portrait from the National Archives depicting "Joshua L. Chamberlain as a brigadier general after his recovery from his Petersburg wound" above and matted overall. The completed size measures 11" x 14.25."
The unnumbered check issued from the First National Bank of Brunswick, Maine has been revised by Chamberlain to read "The Globe National Bank" of Boston. Dated December 20, 1871 and issued to "H.A. Randall, cashier" in the amount of $178.38. Bearing the usual cancellation marks and apparently endorsed verso. Expected paper folds and light wrinkles. The "as" in "cashier" is slightly smeared (mentioned just for accuracy.) Else near fine.
Joshua Chamberlain's adept leadership of a Maine regiment at Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg earned him a Medal of Honor. Chamberlain's forces repelled repeated Confederate attacks, eventually staging a dramatic down-hill bayonet charge and forcing the enemy's retreat. After the Civil War, Chamberlain served as the 32nd Governor of Maine (1867-1871).
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
