Item Details
Description
George McGovern & Anti-Nixon Campaign Pinbacks & Memorabilia, 85+ Pcs
A unique collection of over 85 pieces of campaign memorabilia relating to the 1972 presidential race between Democratic Party nominee George McGovern and Republican Party incumbent Richard Nixon. Pieces include pinback buttons and jugates, coattail buttons, lapel pins, and campaign button tabs. Displayed in an aesthetically pleasing montage on a black felt-covered mat measuring 24.375" x 16.5". The lot comes with an optional wooden and glass showcase behind which the mat was originally displayed. There are many gems in this completely unpicked collection waiting to be discovered! Provenance: From the lifelong collection of a Greenwich, Connecticut gentleman.

The more unusual and three-dimensional items include: an enamel dove form "McGovern" peace pin

and a "McGovern for President" button topping a tri-colored ribbon and donkey pendant. Anti-Nixon memorabilia includes a 2.25" diameter button depicting Nixon as a cherry tree with the caption "Let George Do It" (an interesting though convoluted allusion to George Washington's inability to lie about damaging a cherry tree.) The memorabilia shows to what extent George McGovern mobilized numerous special interest groups ranging from seniors

first-time voters

educators

health professionals

economists

and scientists

to models

taxicab drivers

movie moguls

publishing people

Texans

Oregonians

and Irish-Americans! Expected wear throughout commensurate with age including isolated fading, else near fine.

Candidates whose images or names are featured include:
- George McGovern & Sargent Shriver (1972)
- George McGovern & Thomas Eagleton (McGovern's first vice presidential pick who resigned 19 days after his nomination and was replaced by Shriver) (1972)
- Eleanor McGovern (1972)
- Richard Nixon (1972) (not mentioned specifically by name, but alluded to through caricature and symbol)
- Allard K. Lowenstein for U.S. Congressman from New York (1972)
A preliminary examination revealed the following highlights:
- "McGovern '72" anti-Vietnam rainbow and dove button sold for $60 in 2011
- "Oregon / McGovern / '72" button was one of three items which sold for $46 in 2017
- "McGovern" rainbow against black ground button sold for $17 in 2018
- "Let George Do It" anti-Nixon button sold for $25 in 2014

**PLEASE NOTE: This lot will require third party shipping due to the delicate nature of how the buttons are mounted.
