Description
Harry S. Truman Signed WWII "Honorable Discharge" Stamp Block
A block of World War II Honorable Discharge stamps signed by both sitting 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) as "Harry S Truman" at lower right, and by U.S. Postmaster General Robert E. Hannegan (1903-1949) as "Robert E Hannegan" at lower left along the bottom margin. The block is comprised of twenty one 3-cent "Honoring Those Who Have Served" dark violet stamps depicting an eagle (an emblem also sometimes called the "ruptured duck") surrounded by five stars representing the branches of the armed services. Overall light toning, else near fine. 7.125" x 3."
This stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on May 9, 1946 to commemorate the contribution of American veterans during the recent war. Over 260 million stamps were eventually issued. Postmaster General Robert E. Hannegan's signature adds value to historical documents or commemorative stamp blocks like this one because he died at the age of 46 of heart disease. Like President Truman, Hannegan was a fellow Missourian and lifelong Democrat. Hannegan served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee in the mid-1940s and as Postmaster General between June 1945 and December 1947.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
