Description
**First Time At Auction**
Western Europe, probably Germany, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A forged-steel axe head of a stocky form with a thick butt, a wide hafting hole, a sturdy shoulder, and a sharpened blade edge. One side of the shoulder bears a stamped eight-pointed star within a circular border, and an openwork, keyhole-shaped slot is situated through the top of the blade head. Size: 6.875" L x 4.375" H (17.5 cm x 11.1 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Tennessee, USA collection; ex-private collection, excavated in Germany

Condition
Separation to folded side of hafting slot to shoulder. Minor nicks and pitting to blade, shoulder, hafting slot, and butt end, with light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and patina throughout.
