Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A fine cup of a hemispherical form carved from one half of a shaved coconut shell. The vessel has a round but stable base, smooth walls, and a thin rim. Cups like this example were used at dinner parties, celebrations, and other significant events, though they were mainly used for consuming the kava kava drink during ritual ceremonies.
