1948 Indian Chief Roadmaster motorcycle with custom made leather saddlebags. In 1948 Indian produced a mere 3,000 Chiefs, only a quarter of the 12,000 produced in 1947. The '48 Chief featured a 74 ci, 42 degree side valve engine with a compression ratio of 6:1. Indian offered the option of left or right throttle, with the appropriate gearshift placement it is said that the police preferred the left throttle so they could pull their pistol and fire. Front suspension was a hydraulically damped girder and coil fork, while rear suspension was a plunger style shock absorber. Sadly Indian would only survive for another 5 years after this Chief was produced. This '48 Chief presents as a nice older restoration and appears to have been ridden and enjoyed by the previous owner. It shows some normal wear and is not perfect, however is a very beautiful and desirable motorcycle. It is currently not running and appears to have been sitting for some time, but the motor has good compression and will no doubt run once again with some minor maintenance. We have installed a brand new 6v battery. The rear fender is cracked on the right side and all of the paint shows some wear, but overall paint and sheetmetal are in good condition. Any vintage Indian collector would be proud to own this piece of Indian history! This bike had proudly resided with the current owner for the past 34 years! Odometer currently shows 22,840 miles. We were not able to locate the stamped frame number, but the engine number (CDH5744) clearly matches. Includes Pennsylvania title. Date of issue 04-09-86. VIN: 3485744.
