Roman 2nd quarter 3rd cent. A.D..Marble. H. 21 cm. W. 31.8 cmProbably a fragment of a fallen hunter from a sarcophagus depicting a lion-hunt. The head is largely detached from the ground of the relief and faces to right. The eyes below the pronounced brow are wide open and look upwards. The pupils are drilled. A deep fold above the nose. The mouth is open. The thick, unruly, curly hair continues into his whiskers. Condition: Partially worn, traces of encrustation. Unmounted.Formerly private coll. of a sculptor, Munich. Acquired in the 1970s on the Munich art market (Ohlendorf).
