Item Details
Description
attributed to SIR EDWIN HENRY LANDSEER R.A. (English 1802-1873) A PAINTING, "Rydal Water," MID 19TH CENTURY, oil on canvas. 12 1/2" x 22 1/2" Note: A view of Rydal Hall, the seat of The Le Fleming baronetcy, dating back to the 17th century. Two female figures are seated with a male attendant, watching a hunter with a rifle. Rolling fields are dotted with fluffy sheep, the landscape recedes and at the center a lake and manor house. A record with the Cumbria Archive Service Catalogue preserves that, "The 4th baronet, Sir Michael, was christened 'le' bringing the old family name back into use. The title and the estate split after the male entail was canceled in the 18th century and the estate descended to Sir Michael's daughter, Anne Frederica Elizabeth le Fleming, and her descendants. Anne married the 5th baronet, Sir Daniel Fleming of West Cumbria in 1807 after a short-lived marriage he moved to Hill Top in Crosthwaite where he lived with his mistress and their children while she remained with her mother Lady Diana at Rydal, until her death in 1861." Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
