Description
A Fon bocio wood sculpture, literally an empowered object which is related to Vodun or Voodoo, a religious belief in mysterious forces that govern the world and the lives of those who reside in it. Vodun sculptures not only protect humans but also empower them. The post features a primitive spirit figure on top and shows evidence of having been buried into the ground, perhaps as a marker for a sacred site. The post measures 37 inches tall. Provenance: Ex Dr. Brian Healy estate, New York. ** Verbally confirmed to have been acquired from the SMA fathers Museum of African Art , and it was on display in the Museum in 1978.
