Item Details
Description
Watercolor on ivory attributed to John Wood Dodge (1807-1893, working in Nashville, 1840-1861). Good condition with case but unframed. Subject is dressed in widow's garb with white bonnet and black dress with white collar. Her identity is the source of conflicting oral history. She is believed to be either Cynthia Pillow Saunders Brown or Eliza(beth) Fort Branch. Cynthia Brown (b. circa 1810- d. 1892), was the sister of Confederate Brigadier General Gideon Pillow and the second wife of Andrew Vail Venable Brown, who served as Tennessee governor from 1845-1847. Dodge's account books show an entry on June 23, 1851 for Mrs. A. V. Brown ($60) and on Aug 12, 1853 for Gov A. V. Brown ($75). Eliza Fort Branch (d. 1851) was the wife of John Branch, secretary of the Navy under Andrew Jackson and later governor of North Carolina and Florida. Dodge's account books do not show listings for either Gov. or Mrs. Branch. 2 1/2" x 2". Provenance: Descended in the family of Joel Battle Fort and Sallie Fort of Tennessee. Private Nashville, TN collection.
