Description
Sam Newton (American; Florida, born 1948). Original oil painting on board. Florida landscape, a serene central winding river and a large cypress tree with profuse Spanish Moss and other flora. Colorful pink, peach, and white clouds are reflected on the water surface. Signed lower left S. NEWTON. Along with his brother Harold Newton, Sam Newton was an original member of The Florida Highwaymen, young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Includes original sales tag to front. Presented in a rustic period wood frame. Good overall condition, with normal wear to frame. Measures 30 in. x 24 in. (board), 33 3/4 in. x 27 1/4 in. (framed).
