Description
Alfred Hair (American; Florida, 1941-1971). Original oil painting on upson board. Florida wetlands landscape, a large central dead wood log in central foreground flanked by two large cypress trees with Spanish Moss and additional flora, and in flight water birds to background. Signed lower right A. HAIR. Hair was an acknowledged leader and original founding member of The Florida Highwaymen, young 1950s and 1960s era African American landscape artists mentored by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), who was regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters. Hair's death was a defining moment for the movement. Presented in a rustic wood frame. Good overall condition, with some wear to verso, minor loss and wear to frame. Measures 24 in. x 36 3/4 in.
