Description
Egypt, Late Period ca 664-332 BC. Standing at the back of an integral base that has been hollowed to contain papyrus spells (now missing), the figure of the god is shown mummiform, with a black tripartite wig, broad collar and plaited beard. A vertical line of hieroglyphs at the front reads: 'May a royal offering be given to Osiris, lord of Busiris, the great god, lord of Abydos, that he might (in turn) give invocation offerings,' the back naming the owner reads, 'reversion offerings and all provisions (to) Tjetayet, true of voice, daughter of the prophet of Montu, lord of Thebes, Djedkhonsu [efankh, true of voice].' Ptah-Sokar-Osiris combine three gods associated with resurrection - Ptah is one of the oldest Egyptian deities; he was known as a god of craftsmanship and creation. Sokar was an ancient falcon god who became associated with the afterlife. Lastly, Osiris as king of the underworld, represented the power of regeneration and resurrection.
