Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Native American, New Mexico, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Rose Cata Gonzales (1900-1989), ca. second quarter of 20th century CE. A lovely polished blackware oval dish decorated with a black-on-black abstract design on the tondo and signed "Rose" on the underside. This piece was created by Rose Gonzeles (1900-1989) who was originally from the Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo but married into the San Ildefonso Pueblo and learned how to make polished blackware pottery from her mother-in-law Ramona Sanchez Gonzales (1885-1980) in the 1920s. She then learned the black-on-black technique using matte black for designs, as we see in this example. Size: 5.125" L x 4.125" W (13 cm x 10.5 cm)

Rose also learned how to create black-on-red pottery, most associated with Tonita Martinez Roybal (1892-1945) and her mother Antonita. In addition, Rose is known for innovating of deep carved pottery in approximately 1930 at San Ildefonso. San Ildefonso is best known as the home of famous potter Maria Martinez (1887-1980), whose creations are valued by collectors worldwide. The pueblo is among the best known New Mexico pueblo villages, thanks to its highly skilled painters and finely polished black-on-black pottery which has been produced since the early 1900s.
