Description

Probably Wedgwood, circa 1775.

Pair of Basket-weave fruit baskets and under trays, simulating hand woven reeds. This particular style appeared twice in the Wedgwood catalog of 1774 on plates and in 1817 with similar rims. Stamped L. The design for the present lot was first illustrated in "The Queen's Ware Catalogue" published by Wedgwood and Wedgwood, 1774, Catalogue Plate 8, nos. 28, 29, and described as a "Fruit basket" and "Stand for same" respectively. (please see Kathy Niblett, "A USEFUL PARTNER-- THOMAS WEDGWOOD 1734-1788, p. 16, PLATE 11, in Northern Ceramic Society Journal, Vol. 5, 1984, printed and bound by George Street Press Limited, Stafford).
