Description
Wedgwood, c. 1770
The design for the present lot is illustrated in "The Queen's Ware Catalogue" published by Wedgwood and Wedgwood, 1774, Catalogue Plate 1, no 1. and described as a "Pierced fruit basket". Robin Reilly, WEDGWOOD,(Stockton Press, 1989) illustrates this form in color and with stand, painted in puce enamels and attributed to the artist James Bakewell. Reilly adds "...unmarked. Wedgwood, c.1770...was evidently regarded by Wedgwood as one of his finest 'useful pieces" Note: Reilly's illustration and related note on this form as well as its proper Title, was thoughtfully provided to us courtesy Earl L. Buckman, President, Wedgwood International Seminar

Very minute glaze flakes some created during firing. With multiple firing cracks stemming from the cut work on the interior.
